Cigar boxes were incredibly plentiful back in the late 1800s and were usually discarded by shop keepers as a nuisance. Crafty people found these boxes, and began using them to make musical instruments. Cigar box guitars were a wonderful means for people on hard times to be able to play music.

These incredible instruments came in all shapes and sizes. People were able to make their own banjos, fiddles, percussion instruments and of course guitars. I have included a gallery of vintage photographs and artworks below.

Many iconic guitar players began their musical journey on cigar box instruments. Some famous players were Jimi Hendrix, Robert Johnson and Muddy waters. Over the last few years, the cigar box guitar has certainly found its place again in the hearts and hands of players all over the world. In recent times professional miusicians such as, Dave Grohl, Steven Tyler and Seasick Steve have entertained us on these wonderful creations.

If there is a problem with your purchase, please contact Birdwood Guitars within 7 days of delivery to organise an exchange or repair . Please note that we do not refund for change of mind. Customer pays return postage.

Birdwood Guitars offers a lifetime (limited) Fair-wear guarantee on all guitars and effects to the original purchaser. If there is a problem with parts or construction please contact us to organise a return for free repairs. All postage is paid by the client. Our guarantee does not cover you for misuse or misadventure.

Postage is paid for by the client, We use Australia post exclusively domestically and internationally. Please be aware of any import taxes that you may need to pay if shopping internationally. Birdwood Guitars takes no responsibility for lost items but will provide a tracking number on each order once posted.
